While painting this piece, I aimed to capture the contemplative presence of an aged cowboy under the twilight glow. With rugged outlines, strong shadows, and bold contrasts, I sought to express his resilience and the weight of passing time. I used a wet-on-wet approach to retain spontaneity and vitality in my brushwork. A simplified grey-toned background highlights his calm demeanor and solitary silhouette.
I combined impasto with alternating wet and dry strokes to enhance the drama of facial structure and lighting. The broad shadow of the hat and the textured beard create a rhythm of contrast, while the abstract strokes on the left bring movement and breathing space. The bold red signature at the bottom balances the palette.
