Artwork description
This image of a snake was created by twisting a solitary thread around 200 aluminum pegs evenly spaced around the perimeter of a circle. There are no pegs inside the circle, where the thread always runs in a straight line between two points on the circumference. The complex curves and the photographic accuracy of the snake inside the circle are the result of a mathematical algorithm that is meticulously tuned to the target image. So the result is a piece of art and the actual artistic tool is the computer. The snake is a symbol of wisdom, resoluteness, and renewal, as well as a totem for anyone born in the Year of the Snake in the Chinese calendar. This work has been released as a limited, collectors’ edition that is impossible to reproduce without access to the original knitting sequence, which includes 3600 iterations.
