Coalesce (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Emaan

43.18 x 25.4 x 2.54cm

£600

This body of work was created during my residency at DRAW International, Centre for Drawing Research, in Caylus, France.

This work overlays two maps: one of the neighbourhood where I grew up in Hyderabad, Pakistan, and the other of the area surrounding my residency in Caylus, France. By tracing and overlapping their forms, I developed a visual language that navigates between memory, movement, and place.

The connections are drawn using a terracotta pencil, a material that references the landscape and cultural heritage of Sindh. Through this layering of geographies, the work explores how experiences of place remain interconnected, carrying traces of one environment into another and creating new relationships between distant locations.

Materials used:

watercolor, ink, gouache, terracotta pencil & red oxide pigment on wasli
