This painting is based on the artist’s time of living in South West France. During the summer, the orchestra of cicadas in the pine forests was a source of immense joy. The work is deliberately abstract to allow the viewer to respond freely and find parts of nature or emotion in their own way. It has been created through layers of glaze and also scraping back with the palette knife to expose the warm tones underneath. In some places the layering has led to a beautiful patina or sheen, giving the painting the impression of being antique.
