Nearly 40 years had passed since my childhood excursion to Brittany. Returning in the late August of 2018, I parked the car and walked down between a narrow row of old houses, and my very first glimpse of the ocean was dominated by these interesting rocks, mounted by a small chapel in the small town of Pont-Blanc. In those very seconds a red sailboat passed with picture perfect timing, emblazoned into memory, along with the sounds of the gentle waves, and a man swimming in the clear sea.

Nearly every view along the granite coast cried for a painting, but there is physically only so much time, so I sought to capture this scene in an impressionist style, as it called for light and colour. It is painted with the highest quality professional oil paints on a box canvas, wrapped over a frame. Each side of the canvas has been painting as a continuation to the main front facing side, which means it can be hung (and ideally is designed to be) simply as is.

Materials used:

Oil paints (Rembrandt, Old Holland, Winsor & Newton, Gamblin, lefranc & bourgeois)
