The Chain of Being series was inspired by my reading David Esterley's book 'The Lost Carving'. As a scholar of Plato he is a fascinating read, a conscious artist, striving for mastery... This book led me to read Plato and Plotinus' 'Truth, Beauty and Goodness'. The Platonic reverie left me with a sense of longing for that grace of perception and clarity of which these masters wrote so eloquently. Hence the blues and teals of the paintings in this series, which for me always give rise to a feeling of longing. With the downward, directional pull of the squeegee and brush, I worked to create the sense of airy, dewy space. My aim was to create pieces with a sense of space and airiness. I chose the medium, composition and minimalist style to create the sense of movement and depth.
