Canal bridge in winter sunshine (2025) Original Watercolour by David Harmer
50 x 40 x 0.2cm (unframed) / 40 x 30cm (actual image size)
£210
Original artwork description
The Basingstoke Canal runs through my village. The bridge in the picture is known as Kiln bridge, for obvious reasons. As the canal was being cut in the 18c, quantities of bricks were needed to shore up the sides. The local clay was ideal, and kilns were built at intervals to bake the bricks. Only the name remains
The original intention was to link London by inland waterway with Southampton, and avoid a dangerous sea route. This was a time when war with France was a constant threat. Then came the railways and the canal was redundant. By this time the canal had reached Basingstoke, still many miles to go.
Today the canal is kept open for leisure craft and as a nature reserve.
Materials used:
Cold pressed watercolour paper
Details:
- Watercolour on Paper

- Size: 50 x 40 x 0.2cm (unframed) / 40 x 30cm (actual image size)
