Café de la Paix, 2023
In Café de la Paix, or Peace Café, I explore the quiet moment in which everyday reality opens into something more reflective and symbolic. The painting shows a solitary figure seated at a small café table, absorbed in reading. What appears at first to be an ordinary newspaper slowly transforms into a white dove, as if the act of reading itself were dissolving into flight. Through this image, I wanted to suggest how the mundane can suddenly shift into something transcendental when seen through a different lens.
The figure’s face is partially hidden beneath a hat, allowing him to remain anonymous and introspective. He could be anyone, a writer, a thinker, or simply someone suspended in a private moment of contemplation. His classic attire, together with the ritual of coffee and cigarette, evokes the timeless atmosphere of European cafés—spaces historically connected to conversation, literature, and reflection.
Several subtle elements introduce symbolic tension within the scene. The cigarette ash falling lightly onto the table suggests the fleeting nature of time, while the dove evokes freedom, peace, and the possibility of transcendence. The ashtray itself becomes a small labyrinth, a metaphor for the human condition, the complex paths we navigate in search of meaning within the routines of daily life.
Through this painting, I wanted to suggest that beneath the surface of ordinary gestures lies the possibility of transformation. A quiet moment at a café table can become a meditation on perception, existence, and the fragile boundary between the material world and the search for something beyond it.
