"Between “Not Yet” and “Never”
Series: Comfort Zone
Oil on canvas,
50 × 70 ×1.5 cm

Concept

Between “Not Yet” and “Never” explores a state of inner suspension — a subtle, often unnoticed interval where a decision is already possible, yet still unmade. It exists in the space between action and refusal, between awareness and the habit of remaining within familiar limits.

The scissors become a symbol of choice and freedom, positioned within reach but left unused. The restraint depicted is not merely physical; it is psychological. The figure holds itself back, turning a potential exit into an added weight rather than a release. The work reflects how we unconsciously extend moments of waiting, allowing “not yet” to slowly transform into “never.”

Visual Description

At the center of the composition are female hands bound with a rich red fabric, from which metal scissors hang. The gesture of the hands is open, yet inactive — palms facing upward in a quiet, almost resigned acceptance. The scissors rest just below the wrists, already accessible but still untouched.

The figure partially dissolves into a deep, dark background, creating a sense of isolation and an enclosed inner space. The absence of a face amplifies the universality of the image: this is not a portrait of an individual, but of a shared human condition.

The vertical composition emphasizes tension — the pull between upward movement and the gravitational force of familiar inertia.

Color Palette

The color palette is built on contrasts between warmth and coolness, density and restraint:

deep burgundy, crimson red, wine red, textile scarlet in the fabric, symbolizing passion and inner limitation

cool steel gray, silver graphite, ash metallic tones in the scissors, reinforcing the sharpness of potential action

rich coal black, smoky brown, dark chocolate, burnt umber in the background, creating psychological depth and visual silence

soft flesh tones, sand beige, warm peach in the skin, reminding us of the fragile, human presence within the composition

The lighting is focused and theatrical, with gentle chiaroscuro transitions that heighten the dramatic stillness of the moment.

Technique

The work is executed in oil on canvas using layered painting, glazing techniques, and subtle tonal transitions. The fabric is rendered with careful attention to texture and the weight of its folds. The metallic surfaces of the scissors are painted with cool reflections and muted highlights, giving a realistic sense of sharpness and gravity.

The contrast between the softly modeled skin and the more defined, almost graphic rendering of the scissors intensifies the inner conflict at the heart of the composition.
