BONDI OUTSIDER
Bondi was stinking hot. Haze hung low, weird colours... pink, turquoise, like a 'My Little Pony' had smeared itself on a cloud. Along the boulevard, the surf-watchers lined the rail, shadows stretching long and thin, umbra and penumbra ghosts crawling across the tiles and spilling onto the sand.
I was one of them, though I told myself I wasn’t. Outsider, I liked to think. But there I stood, jammed in with prams and pie eaters, backpackers squinting, gym junkies flexing. All of us leaning on the fence, watching the churn and buzz below.
The question hung there, unspoken. Step down, let the sand scorch our feet, or stay put in the shade, safe in the comfort of laziness.
