Original artwork description
I painted this on-site at Bolderwood Sanctuary, finishing around 8:00 pm just as the New Forest went quiet. The buck at the center appeared right at the end—a silent spectator to the final brushstrokes.
The woman in the sun hat is a nod to a real encounter I had earlier that afternoon. While the landscape and deer were captured en plein air, I added her later in the studio to give the scene a sense of scale and a "human" way into the forest.
It’s a thick, textured oil painting. I wasn’t interested in tiny details; I wanted to capture the weight of the summer trees and that specific, heavy stillness you only get in the woods.
