I painted this picture, wanting to capture a moment of intimacy and silence, when two people are alone and the world seems to dissolve outside the windows. I used muted tones and thick brushstrokes to convey the feeling of warmth, heaviness, and softness of the skin. The blue tones of the background and fabric create a cool contrast to the body, like the breath of the sea or the cool of a room with open shutters.
It was important to me not so much to convey a portrait likeness as to capture the mood—trust, peace, almost the merging of the two figures. One leans toward the other, finding support and peace, the other looks away, lost in thought. Their poses convey weariness, tenderness, and a sense of the simplicity of the moment—when nothing needs to be explained in words.
I wanted the viewer to sense not a subject, but a state: the cozy seclusion of a world where only the two remain and their silent unity.
