South Cornwall. Winter, 2015.

The Atlantic is doing what it does.

One wave. That's all. Rising out of a dark, restless sea, white water exploding at its crest, the whole force of the ocean concentrated into a single moment — and then gone. The sky above is heavy and rolling, layers of storm cloud pressing down on the horizon. Somewhere in the distance, barely visible, a thin strip of land. Everything else is water and weather.
Gary surfs this coast. He knows how a wave builds, how it travels, what it means when the swell looks like this. Every wave that breaks has journeyed sometimes thousands of miles to reach this point. And then the energy moves on. Unless you photograph it, it exists only as a memory.

Part of a series capturing the raw texture and light of the Atlantic during Cornish winter storms. Shot on a Leica M10, printed on Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper. Full frame, never cropped, exactly as it was.

Each print is made entirely by hand in Gary's own studio. Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by Gary himself. Never outsourced. Always personal.
