Black Copper No. 2 is a meditation on warmth and gravity — a surface of burnished copper tones layered with shadow and texture, flowing downward into earthen vertical streaks. Painted in oil and acrylic on natural cork, carefully wrapped around a wooden frame and gallery-stretched like a canvas, the work captures light as both glow and residue, echoing oxidation, erosion, and elemental time.

Part of my Cork Series, this piece is deeply connected to my Portuguese roots — a return to nature, rawness, and simplicity. Cork is 100% natural, reusable, and recyclable. It is harvested without cutting trees; cork oaks regenerate after each harvest, sustaining biodiversity and rural livelihoods.

To paint on cork is to collaborate with the land. The surface is not merely a backdrop but a living material, carrying its own voice of sustainability. Black Copper No. 2 reveals a dialogue between richness and decay, permanence and transformation — a reflection on beauty grounded in earth yet touched by fire.
