Beyond the Shifting Light is an original large abstract landscape diptych by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026. Composed of two 120 × 85 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, the artwork brings together atmospheric ivory and grey skies with deep green, blue-grey, charcoal, brown, and warm ochre passages inspired by water and the changing character of a distant landscape.

When I started working on these two canvases, I was thinking about the moments when a landscape seems to change completely because of light. The place itself remains the same, yet clouds move, reflections appear on the water, colors deepen, and suddenly something familiar feels entirely different.

I wanted to capture that transition rather than a specific location.

I worked on both canvases together, allowing the composition to move naturally from one panel to the other. The upper sections are lighter and more atmospheric, built from layers of ivory, soft white, warm beige, misty grey, pale blue, and blue-grey. Below them, the colors gradually become richer and more dramatic, moving into deep forest green, muted teal, charcoal, blue-black, espresso brown, and earthy umber.

Small passages of warm ochre and burnt orange appear between these cooler tones. I used them sparingly, almost like brief moments when sunlight reaches the surface of the water or touches a distant strip of land.

The paintings were created with professional acrylic paints using palette knives, brushes, layering, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, dripping, and expressive gestural marks. Some passages are heavily layered and textured, while others remain softer and more transparent. This contrast allows light to appear to move across the surfaces rather than remain fixed.

The horizontal forms suggest water, distant land, reflections, and changing atmospheric conditions without defining a particular landscape. I deliberately left these elements ambiguous because I want the viewer to bring their own memory of nature to the work.

One person may see a coastline after rain; another may recognize a lake beneath a changing sky or the moment before a storm disappears. For me, this openness is an essential part of abstraction.

The two canvases are related but not identical. Each has its own atmosphere and movement, while together they create a broader visual landscape. The physical space between the panels becomes almost like a pause—a moment where one view ends and another begins.

Beyond the Shifting Light moves between abstract landscape, contemporary seascape, atmospheric abstraction, and expressive painting. From a distance, the composition creates a strong sense of space and depth; closer viewing reveals layers of paint, scraped surfaces, irregular marks, and subtle changes in color.

For me, this diptych is about the temporary nature of what we see. Light changes the landscape, water changes the light, and a familiar place can become something completely new for just a few moments.

Displayed together, the two 120 × 85 cm canvases create an impressive large-scale composition approximately 170 × 120 cm, excluding the chosen gap between the panels.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind original diptych, painted entirely by hand. Both paintings are signed on the front and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Please note: The canvases are sold unstretched and shipped rolled together in a protective tube for safe international delivery. They can be stretched onto wooden stretcher bars by a local framing professional after arrival.
