Between Deep and Light grew out of a quieter way of working, where the focus was less on gesture and more on atmosphere. I was thinking about depth rather than direction, and about how colour can hold a sense of space without needing a clear focal point. The blues and greens began to layer naturally, shifting between density and transparency as the surface developed.
I work by responding to what is already there, letting one area inform the next. Some areas were built slowly, with repeated movements softening the paint, while others were left more immediate, keeping a sense of energy beneath the calm. The lighter areas are not meant as highlights, but as moments of openness, allowing the deeper tones to breathe and move around them.
There is a quiet tension in this piece that comes from contrast rather than drama. The darker sections hold weight and stillness, while the softer, lighter marks create lift and flow. I like that the painting never fully settles into one mood, instead hovering somewhere between calm and motion, depth and air.
At 100 x 100 cm, the square format gives the work balance and stability. It sits comfortably in a space without dominating it, offering a sense of calm presence that slowly unfolds the longer you live with it. This is a piece that works well in rooms where you want a quieter energy, somewhere to pause rather than be pulled in immediately.
Painted on canvas with finished edges and ready to hang, signed on the back and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, Between Deep and Light is a one of a kind original artwork. It is intended to be lived with, allowing its atmosphere to become part of the rhythm of everyday space.
