Autumn Maples Framing the Stairway Gate (2015) Photograph by sangwon jeon

Brilliant red maple leaves arch over a stone stairway in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, framing a distant painted gate at the top of the steps. A weathered mud-and-tile wall lines the path on the left, its surface patterned with faded carvings, moss darkening the stones below. Through the gate, a small stone lantern and colorful eaves are just visible, softened by distance. Golden leaves mix with the red overhead, the season caught mid-transition, the stairway drawing the eye upward toward the quiet threshold beyond. Foreground stone paving, pale and broad, leads the eye gently into the frame before the steps begin their climb, while low stone walls and scattered undergrowth crowd the margins on either side. The gate's green and crimson brackets glow faintly beneath the canopy, a spot of color waiting at the top of the ascent. There is a hush to the composition, the kind of stillness that settles over a path walked slowly, leaf by leaf, toward something old and quietly waiting.
