Ascension. Some paintings feel as though they are reaching upward while they are being created.
Ascension unfolded slowly over many quiet hours in my Dorset studio and became one of the central paintings within my Maria Magdalena Series — a collection exploring spiritual transformation, awakening and the evolution of consciousness through contemporary abstraction.

The solitary feminine figure gradually emerged through textured layers of acrylic and gold leaf, moving toward an illuminated structure symbolic of higher awareness, inner awakening and the soul’s longing to rise beyond limitation.
For me, Ascension speaks about those moments in life when something inside begins to change quietly but profoundly. A remembering. A lifting beyond fear, doubt and old identities into a deeper connection with light, truth and presence.

This series became deeply personal for me. At my birth in 1946, my father gave me the name Maria Magdalena, and throughout my life I have felt a quiet but profound spiritual connection to that name and the qualities it represents — surrender, resilience, compassion, transformation and love.
Many years later, these paintings arrived almost as though they had been waiting patiently to emerge through the painting process itself.

The rich violets, deep earth tones and luminous gold create an atmosphere of mystery, stillness and quiet power. The textured surface catches changing light beautifully throughout the day, allowing the painting to continually shift within a space.
