The painting evokes and interprets the story in Greek mythology of Ariadne, the daughter of Pasiphae and king Minos of Crete. She falls in love with the Athenian hero Theseus, but according to one version of the story, she is abandoned by her lover on the island of Naxos. However, just as she laments her betrayal, she is rescued by, and marries, the god of ecstasy Dionysus. Grief is transformed into festivity.
