Antony and Cleopatra (2025) Original Oil Painting by Nicolas Maureau
97 x 130 x 2cm (unframed) / 97 x 130cm (actual image size)
£2,569.65
Original artwork description
Cleopatra holding the dying Antony in a gesture of ambiguous tenderness, half embrace, half deposition: this is Antoine and Cleopatra, from the En Majesté series, freezing the fall of a legendary couple of power at its most intimate and most political.
Nicolas Maureau draws here on historical iconography as much as religious art, Saint Sebastian and Irene in particular, where care and eroticism have always sat close together in front of a wounded body. Cleopatra wears a contemporary bolero with pharaonic echoes, while Antony sits on the ground in military shorts, exposed and fragile, no longer heroic, already defeated.
Against a deep black background that erases any specific place or century, the two figures become timeless icons, halfway between mythology and modernity, where collapse is staged as much as it is suffered.
