Original artwork description
There is something so profound about this natural pigment that I wanted to celebrate its raw character: the connection to our most ancient roots, both the earth itself and art. The red ochre has an obvious link to cave paintings and ancient civilisations' artefacts. The surface is highly textured where parts of the pigment are less ground. Beneath the iron oxide are layers of oil, including a lime green to signify the reaction of metals with oxygen. The sides are deep edge, which again, renders a more archaeological feel, as opposed to a modern piece of art. It is a deliberately simple piece with a quality of historical potency.
