A realist, in Venice, is becoming a romantic by mere faithfulness to what he sees before him, and you can’t turn your head without seeing something amazing. Venice never quite seems real, but rather an ornate film set suspended on the water.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the feeling of a city like Venice, where history and legend and art and romance meet and mingle to create that indefinable sorcery. It is like nothing on Earth except an artist’s dream. It feels like you are transported to another time.
To go out into Venice at night is to reconstruct in one’s imagination the true Venice, the Venice of the past. And you are taking it for granted, that you can roam around and get lost in the labyrinth of narrow streets and canals, where a figure in a cocked hat, a mask and a cloak can suddenly appear in front of you - as if from a distant Past ... Appear - and again dissolve in a pearl-laden haze...
