Oils on linen board

Size: 40 x 30cm (unframed)

This oil painting captures the dramatic escarpments near Butterbox Point at Mt Hay, in the heart of the Blue Mountains, Australia. Begun on location in the mid-afternoon light, the work preserves the fleeting atmosphere of the moment — golden sun striking the cliffs, deep shadows falling across the valleys, and the unmistakable blue haze rolling through the distance.

Painting en plein air allowed me to feel the shifting breeze, hear the echo of birds across the cliffs, and translate that living experience directly onto canvas. Later refined in the studio, this work becomes more than a depiction of place — it is an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the grandeur of nature.
