Night transforms a familiar harbor into a world defined almost entirely by light.
In After the Last Light, the dark mass of the sky occupies much of the composition, while the marina emerges below through illuminated boats, slender masts and fragments of warm color. Reflections stretch downward into the water, breaking apart as they meet its dark surface.
I was interested not in describing every boat or architectural detail, but in the moment when recognizable forms begin to disappear into darkness. Against deep blues, charcoal blacks and muted greens, the illuminated whites and yellows become unusually intense. The vertical rhythm of the masts cuts through the darkness, while their reflections extend the composition into the water.
The painting is built through broad, expressive passages of oil paint, with areas of substantial texture contrasted against quieter surfaces. Seen from a distance, the marina resolves into a nocturnal landscape; viewed closely, boats, water and sky dissolve into individual gestures, layers and traces of color.
This tension between recognition and abstraction is central to my recent work. Night removes what is unnecessary. What remains is light, rhythm, color and the sensation of being present before a landscape that is continually changing.
After the Last Light continues my exploration of nocturnal landscapes and the fragile sources of illumination that transform them.
