Original artwork description:

This is an original oil painting by American artist Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO). It is painted on thick 100% rag paper and is in its original professional gold wood framing with double matting under glass (which will be switched to plexiglass if shipped). The work is 30” high by 15.5” wide. Framed, the work is 39” high by 23.5” wide.

The painting is entitled “Aesop and Bosco” and begins with an homage to the painting “Aesop” by Diego Velazquez. The original Aesop was a fabulist and storyteller from ancient Greece (500 BC) credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop’s Fables. Velazquez conjured up and painted a famous portrait of the celebrated Greek in the 1600’s. To this original composition by Velasquez, the contemporary artist, De La Cruz, has added his own dog whose name is Bosco.

The work is a long, vertical work showing the figure of Aesop full length in a casual loose robe, as in the Velazquez original. However, sitting thigh-high at Aesop’s feet is a thick, long-haired black dog with a broad swath of white down his chest, a white snout, and white paws. Bosco looks very sweet and sits at attention for the portrait. The palette is predominated by the dark red of Aesop’s robe and a partially green background. The painting is in pristine condition and signed front lower right by the artist. It is custom framed in a fairly thick gold-gilt wood frame with double matting under glass (or plexiglass if shipping required) with hardware ready for hanging as shown.

De La Cruz has been a full-time professional fine artist since 1975. He was the subject of a museum-wide retrospective at Denver's Museo de las Americas in 2015-2016. He is listed among the three dozen most influential regional artists of the twentieth century in a Denver Post survey of regional curators and proved the bestselling artist at the first International Latino Art Auction in Phoenix, AZ. The Denver Art Museum's first purchase of a living Hispanic's work for its permanent collection was a De La Cruz. Years later, he was the only artist considered when that same museum wanted to commission a major, contemporary digital work commemorating the opening of its new Libeskind Building. De La Cruz was the recipient of back-to-back artist-in-residency grants from Colorado in his early career and received as well their very last painting fellowship. Other honors include award of Best Art Event of the Year by Westword Magazine and appointment to Denver’s Commission on Arts and Culture.
