This watercolor painting captures the distinctive atmosphere of Pontocho, one of Kyoto's most historic and atmospheric alleys, during the daytime.
While Pontocho is famous for its vibrant nightlife, I was drawn to the quiet charm it reveals under the clear midday sun. I focused on the vertical depth of the narrow street, where traditional wooden architecture blends with everyday modern signs. I painted the light filtering down into the alleyway, illuminating the pedestrians and the iconic stone sign at the entrance. My goal was to avoid over-dramatizing the scene, instead relying on precise yet free brushwork to convey the authentic, living rhythm of this beautiful corner of Kyoto.
