This photograph looks toward the entrance of Guksajeon Hall at Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province — a National Treasure of Korea, and one of the temple's most revered structures. A stone-paved path leads the eye between low tiled walls, their curved rooflines echoing the eaves above, toward a modest staircase and the hall waiting beyond. Spring light falls unevenly across the gravel and stone slabs, while young leaves on the hillside behind suggest a season still arriving. What I find compelling here is the sense of approach itself — nothing about this space rushes the visitor forward; the walls, the steps, the framing all ask for a slower pace. Guksajeon was built to honor sixteen generations of the temple's revered monks, and something of that patient reverence seems built into the very geometry of the walk toward it.
