A Man Without a Past, 2023

In this painting I explore the quiet space between memory, identity, and the strange freedom that can emerge from absence. A solitary figure sits with his back turned to the viewer, dressed in a deep blue suit and seated calmly on a wooden chair. Because his face remains unseen, the figure becomes less a specific individual and more a universal presence, someone whose story remains suspended in silence.

The image is partly inspired by those solitary figures one sometimes encounters in cafés — modern flâneurs who sit quietly observing the world around them. These are characters that strongly attract me as subject matter: people who seem to be in the world and at the same time slightly outside of it. The man becomes both observer and presence, absorbed in his own interior landscape.

Two white pigeons rest on his head, captured in the act of mating. Their presence introduces an unexpected tension between calm and instinct. Pigeons are often symbols of peace and freedom, especially when they appear white. Yet here they engage in an intimate act above the figure’s mind, as if thoughts, desires, or impulses have taken visible form. In a sense, the man’s head becomes a kind of living nest, a place where ideas, instincts, and hidden impulses gather and unfold.

The birds may be understood as fragments of thought emerging from the subconscious, ideas that exist somewhere between reality and imagination. Their presence remains ambiguous: are they truly there, or are they manifestations of the man’s hidden thoughts?

On the small table beside him rests a nest containing several eggs. This detail quietly contrasts with the title. While the figure is described as “a man without a past,” the nest suggests the possibility of a future, something fragile waiting to emerge.

The soft pink background creates an atmosphere of stillness, allowing the figure and the symbolic elements to exist in a suspended moment.

Through this image I wanted to create a space of reflection. The painting invites the viewer to consider how identity is shaped not only by what we remember, but also by what we imagine, suppress, or allow to grow within us.
