(Artist's story for this artwork)
Batman stood atop one of the buildings destroyed by the most massive earthquake in Gotham’s history. He glared down at the thugs below scuttling in and out of the shadows like a bunch of filthy rats. He softly spoke out loud to himself as he looked around the city.

“ What a disgrace. The city falls into shambles and only the rich side of town gets rebuilt. It’s been two years since the quake and they haven’t touched this side of the city. It’s always been the rich and the poor. The old “Them against Us” never ends. I know I was part of “Them”, but when you lose your parents that becomes meaningless.”

Batman glances over to one side and sees the Bat Signal resting on a crumbled rooftop. It was in bad shape… with the cord shredded into two pieces. Even the glass plate for the spotlight had a strange oval shape hole broken out of the top of it.

Batman sighs, “No one cares that crime and evil has taken over this side of the city. They don't even care enough to fix the Bat Signal so I could help these poor souls when needed. Maybe I shouldn’t care anymore?”

In the darkness below a young girl named Mary shudders in the cold dampness, aching with hunger beyond endurance. She is hiding in a room among mildewed cardboard boxes as real rats scurry about also looking for food. She slowly rises up out of the shadows and walks to a broken window and stares out into a dingy alleyway. Shadows of evil were shifting between the darkness of the alleyways and doorways. She is holding a Bible in one hand and a large crucifix in the other. They were given to her by her grandparents before they died in the great earthquake. The crucifix used to hang on their wall. She looked down at them as she softly spoke,

“Grandpa… you always told me if I had faith in God he would help me in my times of need.
You also said sometimes it is not our timing that prayers are answered, but His timing. Grandpa… I hope it is His time now because I have no choice but to leave and go find food and warmth. I cannot do this anymore. I will ask God and see if you are right. Either way this tribulation for me will be over right now.”

Mary knelt down on her knees and held the crucifix to her heart as she prayed.

“Dear Heavenly Father… I give my life and soul to you completely at this moment. I ask you to send me a Guardian Angel from above to protect me as I walk through this valley of death before me. I will surely die if you do not hear my prayers and feel my brokenness. I struggle to have the faith I need to release my fears… so now I give my fears to You. If you choose for me to fall tonight may your son Jesus hold me in his arms and bring me home to You. I Love you God… I Love you Jesus. May the Holy Spirit stand for me on this battlefield today. Amen.”

Mary slowly rose and walked slowly to the doorway leading to the dark and ominous courtyard where she knew death, or even worse, awaited her.

Batman was scanning the courtyard below when suddenly the Bat Signal came to life and showed its signal on the building across from it. He quickly glanced at the severed lines as they sparked and writhed about like snakes spitting lightning. He quickly turned back to scan the courtyard as he saw the figure of a small girl exiting a doorway at the far end. She seemed to glow slightly and assumed it was a reflection from the Bat signal. He also detected dark menacing shadows positioning themselves to intercept her. Batman jumped to the ledge and spread his wings and in a flash he was gone.

Mary held her Bible in her left hand as she held her Crucifix in her right hand high pointing to the heavens. She looked up as she walked, focusing on the heavens instead of looking about in fear. She could hear soft swishing sounds, groans, thumps and muffled moans of pain, but she continued walking as she softly spoke the Lord’s Prayer over and over. Suddenly there came a light from heaven and in it Batman floated to the ground in front of her. He landed with a soft thud.

“Do not be afraid young lady, I am Batman and I have come to save you,” Batman explained.

Mary replied unafraid with a confident smile, “Oh, I am not afraid. I know you are Batman. I had prayed to God for a guardian angel as I left this place, but I expected a real angel not you. But you make a great guardian Angel for sure. And I know you will make a great one from here on.”

Batman huffed slightly and spoke softly… almost apologetically,” It is true I am your guardian, but I assure you, I am no angel.”

Mary quickly challenged his statement, “Oh, but you are! You have become a Guardian Angel now Batman. I prayed for one and God sent you just in the nick of time. This is not a mere coincidence!

Mary suddenly stopped talking and looked upward as though she was listening to someone talking to her. She slightly shook her head yes and smiled broadly. Batman studied her, wondering about this puzzling look upon her face. He was about to ask her if she was okay when Mary interrupted him.

“I am fine Batman. My name is Mary. I know you probably don’t know what is happening right now, but our paths have crossed because they were meant to. I am but a tool in God's hands to bring you to another path. A new path. God yearns for you to take this new path…for Him.”

Batman looked confused at her boldness and said, “Listen little girl… I mean Mary. You don’t know anything about me. I saw the Bat Signal and it made me notice you and the dire situation you were about to be in. So I came to you to help you. That is all this is!”

Mary smiled as she responded,”So you think this is all it is? Don’t you think it odd that the Bat Signal worked when the electric lines were severed… and there is NO electricity on this side of the city?”

Batman’s mouth fell open at her having the knowledge of this. There is no way she could have gotten to the top of that building to see the condition of the Bat Signal.

Mary pointed to the spotlight on the crumbling building, “And how strange it is that the signal shows a halo over the bat meant to represent a call to you for help!”

Batman glanced up at the signal quickly and saw a halo was shown over the bat. Where the glass pane had been broken out in the shape of an oval. He looked at Mary in disbelief.

Mary smiled as she softly spoke, “I know Batman. I understand your disbelief. We all feel that way until belief… is all you have. You will believe soon. That is my task given to me by God. You will come to know Jesus very deeply as you do his bidding in God’s name. And I know more about you than you can imagine. Bruce, I know you better than you know yourself! Oh, Forgive me! I should show you proper respect and call you Mr. Wayne.”

Batman froze. He slowly sank to a kneeling position before Mary as he spoke in a whisper, looking deeply into her gentle eyes. “Mary, you are so fearless and wise for your age and in this situation. How can this be? There is a presence about you I do not understand. You seem to be at Peace. I need to find that kind of peace. Teach me, please.”

Mary replied, “I will teach you, Batman. We will both learn of this miracle together. The Holy Spirit is with us.”

Batman scooped her up and they disappeared into the night. Both on a NEW Path!

The End.
