Original artwork description
This painting, like all the others presented in my gallery, is painted in oil. Oil gives me time to "weave" one shade into another, creating soft, almost smoky transitions, and at the same time allows me to apply paint thickly and impasto where I need to convey energy. I like to combine an abstract background with detailed main objects. By leaving the flowers abstract, I force the viewer's gaze to focus on the hummingbirds, creating a physical sensation of their rapid flight. Abstraction gives the viewer freedom. These blue swirls could be flowers, gusts of wind, or even the splash of ocean waves. This uncertainty forces the imagination to "complete" the dynamics, bringing the painting to life with each new viewing. Without this abstract chaos, the hummingbirds would appear simply as frozen, naturalistic objects. As it is, they are part of the swirl, its epicenter.
