She stands with the quiet authority of someone who has never doubted her own importance. White gloves, pink tutu, ribbon bows at the ankles - everything perfectly arranged, everything slightly absurd. At the end of a very thin pink thread, a small creature follows obediently, looking up with the patient devotion of those who have accepted their role in someone else's story.
Fallen roses lie scattered at her feet, unnoticed. The background, dense with pink flowers, envelops her like a wallpaper that has decided to become a world.
There is something of Velázquez in her posture - that aristocratic stillness, that sense of absolute self-possession. But where his subjects looked out at us with dignity, she looks out with something harder to name. Not quite disdain. Not quite melancholy. Something in between, held together by very good gloves and a very thin thread.

About
I paint a world inhabited by creatures who exist between two states - neither fully human, nor entirely elsewhere. Jesters, puppets, dreamers, lovers, mask-wearers. Tender and grotesque, serious and absurd.... Read more
