3802 "The Card Game" (Le Jeu) (2021) Original Oil Painting by Evgenia Saré

50 x 60 x 2cm (unframed)

£3,112.74

Two figures face each other across a green baize table, cards in hand, eyes locked. She holds her hand close, diamonds pressed against her fingers. He studies his cards with the quiet concentration of someone who never reveals what he is thinking. Between them, blue roses lie scattered on the table - forgotten, or perhaps deliberately placed, like tokens in a game that has nothing to do with cards.
The hands are everything in this painting. Long, expressive, almost theatrical - they hold, they point, they conceal. Behind the two figures, a dark floral wallpaper closes in, making the table feel like a stage, and the game like a performance that has been going on for years.
I painted them as a couple who know each other's moves, each other's tells - and yet keep playing. Because the game, whatever it really is, is the thing that keeps them together.

About
I paint a world inhabited by creatures who exist between two states - neither fully human, nor entirely elsewhere. Jesters, puppets, dreamers, lovers, mask-wearers. Tender and grotesque, serious and absurd.... Read more
