Between them, blue roses lie scattered on the table - forgotten, or perhaps deliberately placed, like tokens in a game that has nothing to do with cards.
The hands are everything in this painting. Long, expressive, almost theatrical - they hold, they point, they conceal. Behind the two figures, a dark floral wallpaper closes in, making the table feel like a stage, and the game like a performance that has been going on for years.
I painted them as a couple who know each other's moves, each other's tells - and yet keep playing. Because the game, whatever it really is, is the thing that keeps them together.
