About Angel Atanasov

Biography

Born in 1959, Angel Atanasov graduated from the National Academy of Arts, Sofia, launching a career defined by a rigorous exploration of form and spatial harmony. That same year, they participated in a sculpture symposium in Yasna Polyana, Bulgaria, marking the beginning of a series of exhibitions and symposia both nationally, in Varna, and internationally, such as in Dortdrecht, the Netherlands.
Their early success was underscored in 1990, when they received the III Prize at the Sculpture Biennial in Toronto, Canada. Between 1999 and 2011, they shared their expertise as a sculpture instructor at the National Academy of Arts, Sofia, collaborating with the esteemed Prof. Bozhidar Kozarev. This period enriched their teaching ethos and technical mastery, positioning them as an influential voice in contemporary sculpture.
The sculptor’s artistic philosophy centers on the purity and resonance of forms, delving into the profound impact of sculptural composition as an expression of sound, rhythm, and spatial harmony. Their process prioritizes the dynamic interplay between surface and plane, creating works that evoke an inner melody through complex derivative spatial bodies.
In 2023, the artist unveiled their first solo exhibition at the Contrast Gallery, titled *The Miraculous Emergence of Complex Spatial Forms*. This milestone exhibition illuminated their deep commitment to the sculptural medium as both an aesthetic and conceptual endeavor. Looking ahead, they are passionately pursuing the establishment of a "sculpture laboratory," a visionary space designed to investigate and celebrate the core essence of sculptural creation through collaboration and practice.
