Saint George the Serpent-Slayer is a Roman warrior from Cappadocia. In the medieval "Golden Legend" he appears as the standard of a knight, the victor of the dragon. In European painting he was depicted as a warrior-rider, usually a crusader, killing a snake with a spear. He was considered the patron saint of military ruling families (emperors, kings, princes), chivalry, in particular the crusaders.
