Original artwork description:

This artwork explores the impact of materiality in color perception, utilizing layering of transparent textiles over a background colorfield painting. The fluid interplay of light and shadow enhances dimensionality and alters from different viewing angles, creating a sense of depth and movement.

Merging the disciplines of painting and textile art, semi-transparent fabrics drape across an underlying painting with a flowing, layered effect. Tonal color variations range from deep, intense evergreen and teal to lighter mossy greens and sage, evoking shifting hues of water or deep forest. The gauzy textural fabric overlay adds dimensionality with its soft folds and organic drape, while the use of see-through elements and overlapping hues bends the perception of color and composition, beckoning the viewer to more deeply explore the artwork. The translucent layering contributes an experiential element, blurring tones and depth, and drawing the viewer into a private reflective or meditative state.

The abstract nature allows for a highly personal reaction, enabling the viewer to project their own feelings and experiences into the moment. The overall feel of the painting is emotive and dynamic, with soft, fluid edges contrasting with more saturated areas and defined edges. For some, the deep green color palette may offer an interpretation inferring energy and zeal for life. However, the lighter, softer, and semi-transparent top layers, juxtaposed against those darker and more dramatic hues, lend an ethereal, delicate haze, imparting a hint of vulnerability or tenderness. The overall effect evokes a rich spectrum of emotions.

The painting is unframed and measures approximately 28" wide by 45" tall, with a draped protrusion that extends the length to 50".

Materials used:

Acrylic, ink, draped textile on canvas
