“The Silence 1” is an acrylic, oil and encaustic painting on canvas. 100cmsH x 100cmsW x 4cmsD
The painting is built in multiple layers over a lightly primed canvas. I work directly over the canvas using brushes, knives, cloths, mask tape and squeegees to manage layers of acrylic and oil paint and cold wax. It is a continuous process of ‘correction’ and visual development. I erase and rub away surfaces to reveal what is hidden. The boundaries of what can be managed in a painting present a constant challenge to me and through a process of layering, cancellation and improvisation my intention is always to test such boundaries.
The painting is the first of two that focus on the expansive quiet spaces I visit daily on the Sefton coastline. I walk the beach and dunes every morning at daybreak where and when you can see and hear the silence. In the philosophy of perception, as humans we respond to moments of silence the same way as to sounds, supporting the perceptual view that humans literally hear silence. Within the context of spirituality silence is a metaphor for inner stillness. A silent mind, freed from the onslaught of thoughts and thought patterns, is both a goal and an important step in spiritual development. The painting attempts to express what could be determined as the ‘spiritual’ , free s from the traditional bonds to material reality. The work explores the resonance with the soul, its purpose and nature, and its power to inspire us, to stir our emotions and to help us see beyond the limits of our world.
I maintain my interest in and take inspiration from the abstract expressionists ie: Elizabeth Frankenthaler, Barbara Rae, Hans Hoffman, John Hoyland, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Motherwell, Henri Matisse and Gillian Ayres.
The painting is shipped in a robust custom-made cardboard crate (same as those used to transport large screens). The painting is bubble wrapped to protect the canvas. Further wrapping is made with corrugated card. A wooden frame is placed inside the cardboard crate to preserve the structural strength of the packaging. Each painting is insured to its sale value. Shipping costs within the U.K. take into consideration weight and insurance. U.K. shipping costs for this artwork are £75
