Artwork description:

This is a painted collage of original gelatin silver prints by American artist Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO). It is from three photos taken and developed by the artist in his darkroom and then collaged into a canvas for the addition of oil paint over the mounted collage. The work is 11” high by 17” wide and is matted to a framing size of 19” high by 24” wide. The subject is quite a social commentary which was created back in the 1980’s. On the left is a large sky above a few buildings in which a lightning bolt extends throughout the picture plane. In the center is a black female wearing a t-shirt and jeans and dancing. On the right is a white male wearing nothing but a loincloth and large African mask, also dancing. Over this black and white photographic collage, the artist has added a variety of textures and colors. The palette is quite broad with reds, aquas, blues and yellow on the original black and white photographic gray tones. The work is titled “Striking Movements.” It is in horizontal format and is matted in black museum board with an inside painted gold border. The work is in excellent condition and signed on the front lower left.

Materials used:
