This painting reflects memories from my childhood, when I lived along the Atlantic coast. It is inspired by a photograph that instantly transported me back to days spent gathering shells, feeding gulls, and watching shorebirds dart along the shoreline. The painting is built up in layers, beginning with an abstract foundation of cerulean blue and transparent red oxide acrylic—colors chosen to represent the sky, sea and sand. I worked in successive layers of acrylic and colored pencil, allowing the forms to emerge. The imagery is not meant to represent four specific birds at a specific time and place, but rather the memory of time spent at the water’s edge. The abstract background blurs the line between reality and emotion and represents the seashore as it lives in my memory.
The painting is 14" wide, 11" tall, and 1.5"deep. The substrate is cradled Ampersand Claybord. The edges are painted, so it does not need to be framed. The back has a dust cover and is wired for hanging. It will be ready to hang upon receipt.
The artwork is finished with cold wax, polished to a soft sheen. The wax is cured and stable up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Above that temperature, the wax may begin to soften, so the painting should not be displayed in strong, direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
The artwork will be carefully packaged and shipped in a box; and it will contain instructions for care.
