I like to experiment in my studio and broaden my repertoire by studying the old masters. One of my favorite landscape painters is George Inness, who I really relate to because he spent time painting landscape in and around New York State. I find his dramatic sun sets, moody skies, and dark trees really inspiring and decided to try to work with his color palette and compositional layout to try to learn from his technique. My goal is not to copy his work, but to capture some of the feeling his work evokes, and hopefully create something that is my own that shares the emotional content. This is one of 6 or 7 small studies I made in the past two weeks painting over old landscape paintings that needed some more energy.
