I don't like painting eyes. Never have done. People get so caught up with the eyes and they usually lead the viewer down a specific route. I don't like that. I want you, the viewer, to choose your own story for the work and not be guided by the eyes or titles for that matter. I usually leave the eyes as dark hollow pits with either nothing or a graphical semi circle to represent the eyes. Sometimes to make the work less macabre I use sunglasses. This is one of those occasions. I love to mix the mark making with bright colours and patterns to create my own style of portrait.
