Woman during an aerobic exercise, part of a series of paintings of women at aerobic classes. The paintings are the result of individual observation and the collective goodwill (or exhaustive indifference) of the women involved. A desire to capture the real flesh of women at exercise was the push to do the series The first painting of this series was started in the year 2000, this one was painted in 2019.
I work in acrylic because it allows me to experiment, making changes quickly is paramount when wishing to explore my options. I apply the acrylic in successive washes to achieve a soft structure and then overpaint some areas with a more opaque use of the pigments. I use artists hogs hair brushes to apply and manipulate the paint with large 3" brushes to spread the washes. The work is painted on a Superior Rolled Canvas board as I like the rigidity and fine surface, plus the longevity and resistance to damage has a proven record.
Finished with a coat of Winsor & Newton Satin UV varnish, this not only protects the painting, but has a unifying effect. A suggested frame width of at least 60mm or more for this size painting. Narrow frames on large paintings have tendency to not sit well and have a habit of warping.
