This is a painting of Hadrian's Wall, built around 122 AD. The leading line of the wall draws our eye first into the distance, while at the same time, making us think about the time that has passed between now and when it was new. But while painting this, a thought occurred to me. The landscape in which this human history is housed, the fields that stretch into the distance, have watched the human story unfold with perfect, beautiful indifference. To me, this painting became a story about nature and our tiny, beautiful place within it.
Sold ready to hang and finished with a light, protective retouch varnish which allows the colours to be seen clearly while the work fully cures. A final conservation varnish can be applied in 6-12 months if desired.
