Original artwork description:

Another work inspired by observations at a vintage festival at Gloucester UK. This venue has been a rich source of material, producing many paintings. The female subject had an engaging manner, but the dress I substituted from my wife’s collection as I preferred the colour combination. I like to make the painting while the images are still fresh, combining memory with other resources I am able to produce the painterly qualities I want in the picture.

I use a Rowney Cryla acrylic base coat of burnt orange over the gesso manufacturers finish. Opaque pigments are used to lay down some areas, also acting as undercoating for the subject matter. Subsequent layers of acrylic paint have been applied laced with Liquidex airbrush medium to achieve a wash layer. Multiple layering of pigment allows for a degree of luminosity, avoiding the usual flat acrylic finish.

Finished with a coat of Winsor & Newton Satin UV varnish, this not only protects the painting, but has a unifying effect. A suggested frame width of at least 60mm or more for this size painting. Narrow frames on large paintings have tendency to not sit well and have a habit of warping.

Materials used:

acrylic on superior rolled edged canvas board
