The painting is a contemporary interpretation of the sphinx mythology. The frightening, mythical creature is reduced to a simple domestic sphinx cat, winged and lounging lazily in an exotic setting. The ball of red thread, symbolizing the thread of destiny, rests in a precarious balance, while the book, a symbol of wisdom, is in contrast to the whimsical and unpredictable nature of the sphinx. Similarly, the sphinx’s gaze is direct and penetrating, while the woman’s attitude is meditative and dreamy, absorbed in her reading. Although the solid marble railing and majestic pines evoke a sense of safety and calm, in the distance, above the sea, a golden storm could approach at any moment. The combined techniques of realism and pointillism seemed fitting to me to paint this image, which I created as a meditation on destiny.
