    Abstracting the landscape

    Abstracting the landscape

This past week I have spent a couple of days on a great course led by Michael Weller at the fabulous Hampshire Art Studio on the bank of the River Dever, near Stockbridge in Hampshire. It has been great to sharpen my painting axe.. working with a limited range of colours and focusing on line, colour and tone. Inevitably mine ended up more impressionistic than abstract .... Seems that I just cannot help myself. However the paintings that I created do have a different quality I feel.

    Optimism

It is a pleasure to be dispatching my painting 'Optimism' to a new home in Southampton today. Every so often there is particular painting that seems to mark a change of direction in style.

    Behind the Scenes Work

    Behind the Scenes Work

Sometimes it is worth remembering that when considering the price and value of paintings purchased on line, that there is a not inconsiderable amount of time and effort that does into the transaction including the paperwork, packaging and transit. In this case arrangement for collection by DHL and three copies of forms for USA customs. With Brexit you also need to have EORI tax registration for any exports to the EU and actually now also in reality for the USA. I have a limited company and accountant with much of the paperwork already in place to submit tax returns but it is not for the faint hearted!

    Sidi Bou Said

    Sidi Bou Said

I am pleased to have sold another paintings from my 'Powerful places' series of paintings. This one is is off to Seattle. The painting draws on my memories of the colourful village of Sidi Bou Said on the Tunisian coast. It is a painters dream here in blue and white and the place where Paul Klee had the marked turning point in his use of light and colour. "Colour has taken possession of me," he wrote. These paintings draw on inspiration from my travels which is of course a bit of an ego trip for me...but I have sold a fair few now...so I have a great excuse to paint some more!

    Farley, Hampshire

    Farley, Hampshire

I have really enjoyed painting outside again this week for the first time this year. The experience is very different to working in the studio. Yesterday there was a background of skylark song which somehow helped to associate the experience of painting with the landscape and the memory of place I think.

'En Plein Air' at Farley Mount in Hampshire

'En Plein Air' at Farley Mount in Hampshire

It was fabulous to get out yesterday painting again in the Hampshire Landscape for the first time this year. The Spring greens are super bright and the rape fields are out in flower which offers those welcome flashes of lemon yellow. ...bit of artistic licence possibly with the foreground to provide some additional colour and interest!
