Original artwork description:

This painting was referenced on a painting holiday in Cornwall. I prepared several small oil sketches at low tide on the sandy beach at St. Ives. This is a lovely spot to paint, if the sun is too strong you can find shade from the long high sea wall and the sand is quite firm under foot. When the tide is out, there are shallow sea weedy pools and mooring chains which add interest to the painting. The colourful boats lie at angles and the clear light of St. Ives throws shadows on the sand. The dark sea wall contrasts with the old houses that catch the full light of the morning sun.
