Artwork description:

This picture is a typical forest scene depicting cattle roaming across heaths and woodlands beneath ancient hollies, beech and oak trees. The rights Commoners to pasture their animals on the Crown lands have existed since Saxon times. However it was formalised in 1848 when a register of claims was produced in a set of very large atlases. These rights are attached to land owned or rented in and around the New Forest. I have tried to capture the contrast of the dark shade cast by the Hollies and the brightness of the open forest.
