As part of a series of paintings based on tales of witches, I read all sorts of tales about mysterious old women, cursing their neighbours, sacrificing animals, and even raising the dead. Not exactly historical fact, but great inspiration for a painting.
I wanted this painting to be fantastical and dramatic. I exaggerated the old witch's pose and her anatomy to make her look more imposing, more wicked. Luckily I have a replica skull on my book shelves which was great to reference for the pile skeletal heads surrounding the witch's feet.
Painting evil, menacing characters is always great fun. I love making the characters over the top and painting fantasy scenes like this.
