The Performance is a very unique composition painted in artist's oils on canvas. Although it is only 11" x 14" in size, it makes a powerful statement to the viewer. The metallic gold details on the ballet slippers add elegance to the carefully-constructed composition, and the fine detailing of the jewels and pearls draw the viewer into the intimate scene of a dancer after the curtain has fallen. The textured impressionist strokes of the vibrant flowers and night sky add a joyful, almost spiritual quality to the scene. The sides are painted in a deep indigo blue and the work is ready to hang.
I was inspired to paint this during a period of change in my life, when I was faced with letting go of things from the past and starting on a new path for the future. As a former dancer, I was reminded of how I felt after my final performance - that night when I left the stage for the last time with a great bouquet of flowers and a few mementos from my dressing room drawer. It seemed as if a part of me was dying, and yet I knew that there was so much more to come, if I could only find my way. From that experience I learned that even when it feels like night has fallen on your life, the stars will continue to shine, the flowers will continue to bloom, and a new beginning is just out of your line of sight. Only faith in yourself can lead you to discover what wonders and rewards are waiting for you, when you dare to embrace change.
