Artist's description:

This engraving belongs to my 21st Century Engravings (first phase) produced between 2002 and 2007 most of which depict dream-like beings, people, mythical creatures and strange narratives. The Monkey and the Madonna appeared in my 1986 engraving, 'Monkey of the Madonna' as part of the Animals of the Chinese Year series; the Monkey was based on Albrecht Dürer's engraving 'Virgin and Child with the Monkey' (ca. 1498). In this engraving the association between the Virgin and the Monkey takes on a surreal quality: the Monkey is holding a dowsing rod while the Virgin is wafting horizontally on the breeze. The South Wind is shown blowing in the flag and in the background a row of sunflowers indicates that this scene is in the South of France.
